tolkienism: this is why I avoid the appendices :(

I’ve honestly never seen any of them hating on LotR and I think a lot of them show respect for Tolkien’s work. So what if they only got into The Hobbit and LotR now, not a decade ago and so what if they’re excited about Benedict and Martin being in The Hobbit, I think a lot of Ringers are excited about that too. There are always some immature fans in every fandom, but that’s not a reason to hate the whole Sherlock fandom. I don’t know where there is hating on Sherlockians. I’m one myself (though I’ll always be a Tolkien fan first and foremost), and no one has ever given me a hard time for that.  What I think might be construed as hating is an increasingly critical idea of them - criticizing their tendency to hijack other fandoms or subject matters and take it a notch too far: Sherlock itself has become the Johnlock show (and I’ve been told ‘fuck you’ a number of times for stating that I don’t really ship them in Omegle chats back when I was still looking for Sherlockians to chat with - I’ve stopped now, for reasons that I just mentioned), it’s been ages that I’ve seen a hedgehog that wasn’t captioned as a Jawn, if my dash were anything to go by for content, the new Star Trek movie would revolve around nothing but Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain. The Hobbit is nothing but Smauglock and Bilbo Watson (and Bilbo/Smaug, or Bilbo/Necromancer). More power to you if you want that. I still think there is no wrong way to fandom (and stating that again and again is kind of making me feel like a broken record, but I won’t stop) unless it actually gets out of hand (see the recent appalling behaviour revolving around the creators’ twitters, leading them to delete or abandon their accounts). But what irks a lot of Tolkien fans is the fact that the Hobbit is treated as yet another Sherlockian playground exclusively,by Sherlockians. Yes, Martin Freeman is the main character. Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch portrays not one but two antagonists. But those are the actors, playing Bilbo Baggins, Smaug and the Necromancer.  And most Tolkien fans, being Tolkien fans would like to enjoy that. Not Sherlock in Middle-earth. And enjoying the material on its own terms is getting increasingly harder, because the Sherlock fandom is huge, and vocal and often hard to avoid. Of course that is not the whole fandom, just like the whole Tolkien fandom isn’t full of haters and purists. But the Sherlock fandom does have a tendency to… be very enthusiastic. Either intentionally or due to that extensive enthusiam, they have a tendency to leave their fingerprints over material that isn’t their core fandom. Other fandoms, who may be smaller, less vocal, focused differently… might be bristling at that. But really? Stating that? Isn’t hate.  THANK YOU. This summed up my thoughts and got to the crux of the issue in a much clearer way than I probably could. Yes, this. Thank you so much, Elleth. :) Really, I welcome anyone and everyone to watch the films with me. More people are always good, and more fans is always a plus. But if it’s being twisted into another fandom, then I think Tolkien fans have a very good reason to feel upset. For how long have we been waiting for a Hobbit movie again? Thank you.
